about

When Hannah Valente opens “What’s Left Behind”, the final track on World Smasher’s EP Big Head with the lines “Growing up means new hair dye, at least to me/ friends are moving I guess we need a new band line-up”, the San Francisco band achieves a beautiful dichotomy: capturing the aches and fears of growing up and facing change, performed with the assurance of a band who has truly stepped into their own.  A 5-piece comprised of seasoned SF music veterans (ft. members of The She’s, Spiritual Cramp, The Sweethearts, Fire Arm, Crucified, Blossom), the expert execution of their second release is no surprise. Jacob Breeze and Clark Todd’s ripping guitar riffs and massive tone, often akin to some of the 90s most iconic alternative rockers, (Dinosaur Jr, My Bloody Valentine, Smashing Pumpkins), along with Colin Burris and Ryan Andersen’s blustering yet tasteful rhythm section create a vivid atmosphere, which, when paired with Valente’s decisive yet somewhat aloof vocal stylings (think Kim Deal), create a whole that is truly greater than the sum of its parts. What World Smasher has created on Big Head is timeless: good songs with a hell of a lot of feeling.
